Maryland hasn't landed a prospect out of DeMatha (MD) since former four-star safety Nick Cross inked with head coach Mike Locksley to close the 2019 class. That hasn't deterred efforts, though, as the staff is in pursuit of a pair of linemen from the WCAC powerhouse. Three-star defensive tackle Emmett Laws, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound lineman, has embraced offseason workouts but has added a new wrinkle after taking in indoor track practices through the offseason. He's best known for his work on the field where he's filled in as a quality run-stopper for a DeMatha defense who shined against the other top WCAC offenses. With offers from Charlotte, Marshall, UMass, Temple, Boston College and Virginia Tech among others, a handful of other Power Five schools stopped to check on Laws' development. "I met with Tennessee, South Carolina, Rutgers, Florida State." Maryland made the quick stop during the second week of the January eval period with head coach Mike Locksley and running backs coach Elijah Brooks making the local rounds. "Everything’s been going well with them. It’s just been more how’s football been going, how’re the workouts going at my school? It hasn’t been too in-depth yet." Laws also made it into College Park for a game this fall where he connected with the staff prior to kickoff. "They got way better. They’ve been improving a lot. Maryland looked real good this year." Laws will look to visit Virginia Tech, Maryland and Pitt once visits resume and spring practices kick off, but the staff is also in pursuit of a versatile lineman. Projected three-star Terez Davis currently lines up as both a tight end and defensive end for the Stags, but at 6-foot-7, 270-pounds, schools are pondering the possibility of him playing offensive tackle at the next level. "I think I want to stay around 270ish because some of these coaches want me to play offensive line. Right now I play defensive line and tight end so I’ll probably just maintain weight. If they want me to play offensive line, I’ll probably have to put on a few more pounds," he told IBG. "Maryland said I can play whatever I’m more comfortable with. South Florida, they prefer me on line and James Madison. Alabama followed me and they like me at line too." There's an obvious reason why Davis is entertaining a flip to the offensive side of the ball. "I’ll consider it because they’re making a lot more money." After becoming the first offer for Davis back in September, Maryland has placed the 'athlete' tag on the three-star prospect as they chip away. "I talk with coach Brooks, he’s going to get me around in the spring and show me around campus. I missed coach Locksley when he stopped by because I was already at USF, but coach Brooks has been reaching out a lot. He’s been talking to my mom. We’ve been staying in touch a lot." The hometown vibe is one that Davis is high on early in the process. "I just think the culture because I think there’s a lot of culture especially with it being home, the hometown hero vibe. It’s a good place to be, everybody knows everybody, the coaches have been there a while. Coach Brooks was at DeMatha before, so I feel like there’s a lot of culture." His trip to USF last month marked his first time checking out the Bulls with a new coaching staff in place. "It was great. They had a lot of nice facilities. I was surprised because their coaches, they got a new staff but they’ve got something good there. They got coach Golesh, a lot of people from Tennessee so they’re looking really good." Davis will look to visit "Syracuse, James Madison, South Carolina, Boston College and definitely Maryland." Laws is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by On3, sitting as the 19th-best prospect in Maryland. Davis is not yet rated by On3, though IBG rates him as an 87 overall.
