Maryland football TE Dorian Fleming named to preseason watchlist

Tight end Dorian Fleming became the latest Maryland football starter recognized on a 2025 preseason watch list after being selected to the John Mackey Award Watch List.

Fleming, who was already one of five players from the program selected to the Shrine Bowl 1000 watch list, arrived in January with surefire buzz as a potential star at the position after a breakout season at Georgia State. After redshirting in 2023, the Virginia native finished second on the team with 49 catches for 558 yards and six touchdowns before being selected to the second team All-Sun Belt, College Football Network All-Sun Belt First Team Offense and a HERO Sports G5 All-American in 2024.

Despite drawing interest from several Power Four schools including Oklahoma after hitting the portal, Fleming took just one official visit after becoming available as the Virginia native returned home and took the short trip to College Park to check out Maryland football.

“I had like 25 offers the first day I was in,” Fleming told IBG in the spring. “The next day I got like ten more. I didn’t make any posts, just wanted to keep everything under wraps.”

“That was the only visit I ended up taking and once I got there, like I said, I didn’t feel like I needed to see anything. I felt right at home. I enjoyed myself. My family enjoyed themselves. With it being so close to home and just the opportunity there, I can’t beat it.”

Fleming arrives in College Park where he’s expected to play a major role in the passing attack while BTN analyst Jake Butt noted he expects a “Corey Dyches-like impact” in Maryland’s 2025 offense. The Georgia State transfer was also selected to Phil Steele’s fourth-team All-Big Ten team in his preseason conference preview.
