Maryland football QB Malik Washington named impact freshman in 2025

Days after being predicted to be named the starting quarterback in 2025, Maryland football freshman quarterback Malik Washington drew more praise heading into the start of summer workouts.

Washington was named one of 13 impact freshmen by CBS Sports while he joined Michigan’s Bryce Underwood as the two quarterbacks on the list.

Skinny: After losing Billy Edwards to Wisconsin, Maryland could have replaced him with an experienced transfer. Instead, they went with UCLA's Justyn Martin, who's thrown 35 passes in his three-year career. That left the door open for Washington to push for the starting job. The freshman took advantage of the opportunity, capping things off an impressive spring with a 12-for-18, 168-yard and two-touchdown performance in the Terrapins' spring game.

It's high praise for the Archbishop Spalding product who looks to elevate the unit heading into fall camp alongside Justyn Martin and Khristian Martin, but it’s matched what the top-100 signee showed through spring ball. Now, Washington will look to become Maryland’s first freshman quarterback to start a game since Kasim Hill did so back in 2017.

“I think the big thing with Malik and all the quarterbacks is him being here early has allowed him to get a jump start,” head coach Mike Locksley said in the spring. “Being local, being able to graduate early, being able to get into meetings, and the time he spends with Coach Pep [Hamilton] and Ted [White] and the offensive staff, these reps that he's getting are like added value for a quarterback and for him to be able, as a young kid, get the type of reps and the type of coaching that he's been able to get these first couple of months he's been on campus, you can see that the talent is. I've been really pleased with how he's retained information. I've been really pleased with how he's been able to transfer the classroom onto the field and we're really pleased with his development.”
