Head coach Mike Locksley and Maryland football have their first portal commitment during the spring portal window with former Ohio DT Cam Rice going public with his decision.
Rice, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound grad student originally from Morgantown, committed to Maryland after visits to Purdue, Indiana, Mississippi State, Tennessee and West Virginia while Virginia Tech, UCF and Cal were among the other Power Four teams in pursuit. Rice visited College Park back on Wednesday, April 15 and joins the program with one year of eligibility left.
Rice quickly materialized into a coveted portal target after announcing his departure back on April 2 and now fills a key need in the trenches under defensive line coach Corey Liuget and defensive coordinator Ted Monachino, filling to void left by DL Lavon Johnson.
Rice, the grandson of West Virginia administrative assistant a former walk-on at West Virginia where he spent one season. The Morgantown native then transferred to West Liberty where he totaled 89 tackles, 37 TFL, 14.5 sacks, 11 pass deflections and a pair of blocks in 20 games and two seasons with the program. Rice then spent 2024 at Ohio where he started in one game while amassing 30 tackles, 8.5 TFLs, three sacks and one pass deflections.
Rice was also one of 38 nominees for DII Harlon Hill Trophy and was named an All-MEC First Team selection after becoming a three time conference player of the week. Rice also led all DII defenders in TFLs and TFLs per game.
