Maryland Football is Expected to Hire Kevin Sumlin on 2023 Staff

Maryland is expected to hire Kevin Sumlin on the 2023 staff. Sumlin is expected to fill the offensive coordinator and tight end vacancies as head coach Mike Locksley turns to a familiar face to round out the offensive staff. Sumlin, former Arizona and Texas A&M head coach, was an analyst for Maryland last year before moving to the USFL as the head coach and GM of the Houston Gamblers. Sumlin amassed a 51-26 record at Texas A&M in six seasons before finishing 9-20 during three seasons at Arizona. Sumlin also led the Aggies to their best season since 1947 and led Houston to two CUSA championship games. This will mark Sumlin's first assistant coaching position since 2007 when he was co-offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach at Oklahoma. Sumlin's familiarity with Mike Locksley serves as a big boost as the Terps' offense looks to maintain its identity. He fills the role left vacant by Dan Enos, who became the new offensive coordinator last month at Arkansas, while Mike Miller left the tight end position vacant after becoming the new offensive coordinator at Charlotte in December. Maryland still has a coaching vacancy left to fill with the safety position vacant after Wes Neighbors joined the Ole Miss staff last month.
