Maryland football found itself in familiar territory in the 2023 Big Ten preseason football poll.
Cleveland.com assembled the preseason poll and with 37 votes cast, Maryland tallied 143 points to place fourth in the Big Ten East behind Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Michigan was picked as the preseason favorite to with the east division, while Wisconsin edged Iowa by one point to be named the preseason Big Ten West favorites with 233 points while Minnesota drew one vote to win the division.
Michigan was also the preseason pick to win the Big Ten with 27 votes, while Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison was named preseason offensive player of the year. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, meanwhile, tied for fifth with Penn State RB Nick Singleton for the honor. Maryland did not have a selection for preseason defensive player of the year, while former Maryland verbal and current Illinois star Jer’Zhan ‘Johnny’ Newton finished second in voting.
A silver lining from Tuesday’s preseason poll is that Maryland will only travel to one of the five toughest road environments with an Oct. 7 road game set against Ohio State. The Buckeyes (9) were voted as the second-toughest road atmosphere in the Big Ten, behind Penn State (17) and ahead of Iowa (7), Michigan (3) and Wisconsin (1).
