After creating a pipeline for his top players to land in College Park, Maryland football has added another layer to the connection with Archbishop Spalding, but this time it's along the coaching staff.
Head coach Kyle Schmitt is expected to join Maryland football's coaching staff as the new tight ends coach. Capital Gazette was first to report the news on Wednesday morning.
Schmitt takes over as tight ends coach where Hal Hunter served in 2025, taking over a room led by Dorian Fleming and Preston Howard, while he now gets to coach one player he once gameplanned against with former Calvert Hall and tight end JT Taggart back for his second season. Maryland also signed a trio of tight ends with Javonte Williams and Damon Hall already enrolled and Braydon Marko set to enroll next summer.
Schmitt is also a former offensive lineman at Maryland where he started 27 games at center and guard, while playing 48 games during the first few seasons under head coach Ralph Friedgen. Scmitt signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2006 where he spent time in training camp before transitioning into coaching, first at Atholton High School before taking over at Archbishop Spalding in 2013.
Schmitt also heads to Maryland after winning the last four consecutive MIAA-A conference titles, doing so with several eventual Terps. He now heads to College Park to team up with several of his former players in quarterback Malik Washington, defensive lineman Delmar White and defensive backs Lavain Scruggs, Jayden Shipps and Sean Johnson.
