Maryland fall + winter sports report: women's basketball secures record 91-21 win vs. Delaware State

Men’s Soccer

4th-ranked Maryland men’s soccer looked to have a close victory in the first half as it faced Washington in the quarterfinals, a team it defeated earlier in the season, but the Huskies ultimately won 3-1 and sealed the Terps’ fate in the second half.

Freshman Henry Bernstein had his first career start and put Maryland on the board in the first half, and that would be the only goal the Terps were able to get off.

Washington found its momentum and fired off two goals in the second half, in addition to one in the first half.

"The finality of this moment is very difficult, but this team is very special. They brought the Maryland style, the Maryland culture, and the Maryland pride back into our program. I'm so grateful for the season we've had," said head coach Sasho Cirovski.

Although it was an unfortunate ending for the Terps in the NCAA Tournament, Maryland ended the regular season undefeated and finished with a 13-2-4 record for the entire season.

Track & Field

Maryland women’s track and field kicked off the start of its indoor 2025-26 season at the Navy Invitational, and four terps set a facility record in the 4x400 with a time of 3:42.57 Sophomore Kanai Bey, freshman Taylor Riley, senior Maya Mosley, and graduate student Maya Valmon.

Several Terps also won in six events. Some of these included graduate student Maya Valmon received first place and moved to second on Maryland’s all-time indoor list in the 200 meters with a time of 23.92 seconds; senior Nyla Cherry earned first place in the women’s long jump, hitting 5.73 meters; and freshman Riley had her debut and won the women’s 500 meters in 1:15.29.

Maryland will continue the season in the new year on Jan. 17 in the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge.

Women’s Basketball

7th-ranked Maryland women’s basketball continued its win streak after securing a 100-99 win over Minnesota and a 91-21 win against Delaware State.

The Terps faced one of their first challenging games of the season against Minnesota to start conference play, going into double overtime, but a layup in the last 10 seconds by senior Saylor Poffenbarger secured the win for Maryland. Poffenbarger also had a career high of 30 points.

"This game felt like March. That's what you're going to see playing in the best conference in the country. We're going to have those battles every single night," head coach Brenda Frese said.

Maryland dominated Delaware State, only allowing 11 points in the first half and 21 points total, the fewest points the Terps have allowed in program history.

The last non-conference game for Maryland is against Central Connecticut State on Friday Dec. 19, with tipoff at 11 a.m.
