Maryland controls Nebraska in rematch, advances to championship game

Writer: Ahmed GhafirAhmed Ghafir

Maryland baseball is headed back to the Big Ten Tournament championship for the first time since 2015 after defeating Nebraska 4-2 in the rematch game. Unlike most of the season, it was the Terps' pitching that won them the game as Jason Savacool, who picked up the relief win on Thursday, finished the day allowing just four hits, two walks, and striking out six batters on 86 pitches in six innings. Maryland would start out hot scoring four runs in the first five innings. Kevin Keister would drive in two of the Terps' four runs while Elijah Lambros and Eddie Hacopian registered the other two RBIs for the Terps. https://twitter.com/TerpsBaseball/status/1662537726284161024 Nebraska would threaten Maryland's lead in the sixth inning after getting two runners on with no outs, but Savacool forced the Huskers into a double play before a flyout ended the inning. Nebraska would threaten Maryland again in the final frame as Andrew Johnson came in for the save opportunity with bases loaded and no outs to allow a pair of late runs that wasn't enough. Saturday proved yet another strong outing for Maryland's pitchers through the postseason run, allowing just five runs in three games. The Terps' offense hasn't been their usual selves, only scoring an average of just 2.67 runs per game, but they'll get a chance to redeem themselves on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's matchup marks the fourth time Maryland and Iowa have met the season with the Terps winning two of three games, but just like Maryland, Iowa enters Sunday winners in all three games. While Maryland is working to iron out its kinks on offense, Iowa enters Sunday red hot as the Hawkeyes' offense has tallied 27 runs in the three games. Saturday's win moved Maryland to 40-19 on the season, the second consecutive season and fourth time in program history that Maryland has won 40 or more games. Sunday's championship game is set for 3 PM EST on the Big Ten Network. Related Links
