Maryland saw their nearly two-year recruiting efforts on Freedom (VA) three-star running back Jeff Overton pay off earlier this month once Overton was ready to take the next step in his recruitment. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound running back released his top ten at the beginning of the month with Duke, Maryland, NC State, Ohio State, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia still in the mix. https://twitter.com/JeffreyOverton1/status/1744168470411931832 He’s coming off a visit to Virginia Tech for their basketball game against Virginia Tech over the weekend where running backs coach Elijah Brooks has been in consistent target for the top Hokie target. “It felt good. We talk every day. We went up to the basketball game, took some photos then got to sit in in a position meeting,” Overton added. His next visit is to Virginia as the three-star prospect takes a trip to Charlottesville on Wednesday. “I’m setting up a lot of my visits now so doing the closer schools first,” Overton told IBG. “For now just taking everything day by day. It’s all about spending time with the coaches, seeing how they operate” Maryland has been a steady player for Overton as the Virginia native was a repeat visitor through the 2022 season. Overton built on that to make his way back to College Park for a pair of games this past fall as running backs coach Latrell Scott has moved full steam ahead since picking up a recruitment that Gary Wortham Jr. once started. Scott, along with head coach Mike Locksley, made the trip to Freedom High School on Friday to stop by in-person while Scott reconnected with his top target again this week. “Coach Scott actually just called me . Things have been going well. We talk a lot, honestly. He just says that I need to come up there more,” Overton said. “He’s thrown a couple of dates but he’s more just telling us just to come up, spend time with us, check us out. I just like it up there, it’s close to home and it feels like it’s home when it’s up there.” Multiple gameday visits have given Overton a chance to evaluate how Maryland uses their running backs within the offense. “It’s similar to what I do now at high school, so they’ve told me it won’t be as big of a transition. It’ll be the same thing at a higher place, at a higher level.” Jeff Overton is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 14th-best prospect in Virginia. He was named the 2023 Gatorade Virginia Football Player of the Year after rushing for over 2,300 yards while adding 44 total touchdowns. Related Links
