Maryland checks in on '22 Florida DL

Florida Atlantic was the host for a can’t-miss game over the weekend between St. Thomas Aquinas and Cardinal Gibbons (FL), where Aquinas proved to be too much en route to a 39-14 win. The game brought in coaches from all over the country as Maryland defensive line coach Brian Williams was among the coaches in attendance where he was able to scout Gibbons three-star defensive end Ahmad Moten closer. Maryland extended a verbal offer to the 6-foot-3, 290-pound prospect back on October 6 to become the first Big Ten offer and it was one that didn’t disappoint.

“I was pretty excited and shocked. Coach [Brian] Williams called me, FaceTimed me and told me I had a scholarship and I just smiled,” Moten told Inside the Black and Gold. “He told me he was coming down.” The two weren’t able to connect in person on Saturday due to NCAA rules, but Williams has started to tell Moten about his defensive fit. “He was telling me a little bit about them, I like it so far. He told me what defense they run and how they see me fitting in. He was telling me I can play the edge but I’m capable of playing the 1, 3, or 5 [tech].”

Moten will now look to schedule visits to check out his growing Power Five interest in person, but he’s in no rush to take the next steps. West Virginia became the latest school to offer Moten last Wednesday to join East Carolina, Iowa State, and Western Carolina for the emerging linemen. He’ll look to see all the schools once his season is complete.

“I’m trying to set officials up. I’m trying to get one with Iowa State, Maryland, West Virginia, and East Carolina but it’ll be after the season.”

The lone school that Moten has checked out is East Carolina back in the summer for an unofficial visit, so delving further into his visits remains the primary focus but isn’t his first priority with the season underway.

With no favorites or firm top group, Moten is focused on putting together a complete senior season tape with Syracuse and Kansas two additional schools showing interest. “I just want to show I can use my hands more,” Moten added. “I look at [Kansas City Chiefs lineman] Chris Jones a lot.”

Ahmad, the younger brother of Miami defensive lineman Anthony Moten, has no timeframe for a decision and is not an early enrollee.

Moten is rated a three-star prospect and an 85 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the 153rd-best prospect in Florida.
