A resolution in the court case for Maryland football cornerback Dontay Joyner was settled following Thursday's court hearing.
Joyner was officially released from Harford County jail after serving a 27 day sentence ahead of Thursday's trial. Joyner pleaded guilty to the telephone misuse charge while his harassment charge was dropped. Joyner will serve in an anger management program while being barred from contact with his girlfriend at the source of his dispute, while his guilty plea resulted in a three year supervised probation, a mental health evaluation and enrollment in an abuse intervention program.
The senior cornerback was previously arrested on June 11 after being charged with telephone misuse for making repeated calls, electronic communications harassment, and violating release conditions, a misdemeanor offense, according to court records released last month. Joyner threatened to shoot his girlfriend after an argument over her wanting to breakup, leading the Maryland cornerback traveled to Laurel to confront her. Joyner's initial arrest was then extended after calling his girlfriend while in jail despite already being charged with two misdemeanors.
With a resolution now in hand, the next question is whether the rising senior returns to the program ahead of the 2026 season. Joyner was one of two prominent cornerbacks to announce his return to the program this offseason, alongside Jamare Glasker, while Amari Jackson transferred from Boston College to Maryland back in January to add to the top of the room. Whether a third NFL Draft prospect reunites with the pair of seniors at the top of the room will be a decision for head coach Mike Locksley to make ahead of fall camp.
