With Maryland now in position for its first win streak during Big Ten play, head coach Buzz Williams will lead his team back in College Park on Wednesday night with Iowa set for the return matchup following the 19-point loss in the conference opener back on Dec. 6. While Wednesday also marks 'Tiki Terps' night with 2,000 Terps Hawaiian shirts set for students, Wednesday also marks easily the most intriguing visitor of the season with former G-League forward Kyree Walker set to begin his official visit.
Assistant Aki Collins has led Maryland's interest in the 6-foot-6 now 25 years old as the staff evaluates the possible roster fit on next year's roster while Louisville, Ole Miss and Missouri are among the teams reportedly also under consideration.
"Goal was to play in 2025-26, things got delayed. I want to find a place for next year, play a full year," Walker said on GCR on Tuesday. "I heard they like me. It was a thought out plan. I'm highly interested in the school, the guys coming in."
Walker, previously a three-star prospect in the 2020 class, instead opted for the professional route despite committing to Arizona State out of Hillcrest Prep (AZ) where he began his career with the Chameleon BX ahead of the 2021 NBA Draft. Instead, Walker joined the Capital City Go-Go, the Wizards G-League affiliate, for the 2021-22 season where he averaged 4.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 9.1 minutes across 11 appearances alongside Cassius Winston and Pat Spencer among others.
He's stayed true to the professional route after playing in Greece and Canada among other countries, but with the growing trend throughout college athletics of more athletes looking to test their eligibility despite professional experience, Walker becomes the latest to attempt to give college basketball a shot after reportedly being ruled eligible to play in early January.
Maryland currently has 11 players on the roster with an additional year of eligibility along with four signed recruits in the 2026 class, though despite Buzz Williams saying ahead of the season that he wants to lead the country in lowest roster turnover rate, whether that remains true into 2026-27 is the biggest question mark. And that doesn't include Pharrel Payne's future, who has yet to return to the court since suffering a second injury in the first half vs. Michigan during the conference home opener.
