After a challenging weekend against Oregon, the Maryland Terrapins bounced back in dominant fashion with a 10-3 road win over Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday, powered by five home runs and a top-notch pitching performance from Brayden Ryan. The win provides much-needed momentum as the Terps (17-21, 4-11 Big Ten) head into a pivotal conference road series against Indiana – still in search of their first weekend series win of the season.

Back on Track, featuring the Long Ball

The Terps wasted no time establishing control in their midweek matchup against Mount St. Mary’s. Hollis Porter set the tone early with a three-run homer in the first inning, and Elijah Lambros followed up with a solo shot in the second. Brayden Martin added his first home run of the season in the fourth, helping Maryland build a commanding 6-0 lead by the midway point.

On the mound, Brayden Ryan delivered the best outing of his season, tossing seven strong innings and giving up just one run on five hits. His gem kept the Mountaineers’ offense quiet while Maryland’s bats did the rest.

Late homers by Jacob Orr and Eddie Hacopian – the latter a three-run bomb – capped off Maryland’s offensive outburst. All but one of the team’s 10 runs came via the home run, and the victory marked a season sweep of Mount St. Mary’s.

A Big Ten Test in Bloomington

Now, Maryland faces a major test on the road against Indiana. The Hoosiers sit fourth in the Big Ten standings and have been particularly dangerous at the plate this season, leading the conference in hits and ranking top-20 nationally in that category.

The Terps will have to contend with a balanced Indiana offense led by Korbyn Dickerson and Devin Taylor. Dickerson has been especially lethal, tallying 15 home runs and a Big Ten-leading 58 RBIs. Taylor, batting .365, is the team’s most consistent hitter and recently tied the program record with his 47th career home run.

Pitching-wise, Indiana leans on veteran Cole Gilley, who brings a 7-1 record and 3.02 ERA into the series. His consistency and ability to limit walks (only 9 in over 40 innings) make him a tough matchup for any lineup.

Still, Maryland has some firepower of its own. Slugger Alex Calarco – who recently earned a spot on the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List – leads the Terps with 13 home runs and 49 RBIs. He’ll be joined by patient hitters like Brayden Martin, who leads the Big Ten in walks (38), and Chris Hacopian, as the Terps look to keep up with Indiana’s offensive pace.

Another key storyline will be the continued dominance of Kyle McCoy, Maryland’s redshirt sophomore left-hander. After missing the 2024 season due to injury, McCoy has returned in strong form, sporting a 3.06 ERA with 51 strikeouts across 53 innings. His presence will be needed as Maryland tries to secure its first Big Ten series win of the season.

What’s at Stake

With just four conference series remaining, every game matters for Maryland’s postseason hopes. Head coach Matt Swope emphasized after Tuesday’s win that if the team can recapture the energy and execution they showed in recent games, they’ll be a tough out the rest of the year.

“The theme for the season is just way too many freebies,” Swope told The Diamondback.

First pitch in Friday’s series opener is set for 6 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday games scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. All games will stream on Big Ten Plus.
