After winning its season-opening series versus USF over the weekend, Maryland baseball fell to West Virginia in their home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Mountaineers opened the game with a five-run outing in the top half of the first and stretched the lead to 7-0 after Ryan Van Buren gave up a solo shot in his first appearance of the season. Maryland punched back after third baseman Nick Lorusso’s brought in the first two runs off a double in his 22nd career game with multiple RBIs. After another West Virginia solo shot in the seventh stretched the deficit to 8-2, centerfielder Elijah Lambros cranked his first career home run on a two-run shot to cut the lead in half. Maryland opened the season winning two of three on the road against USF after belting grand slams in each game. After falling 8-7 in game one, Maryland outscored USF 17-6 over the next two games. Matt Shaw went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored on Sunday. The five hits set a new career-high for Shaw and was the fourth time in his career he posted four hits in a game. Ian Petrutz recorded two hits in each game to open the season, meanwhile, sophomore infielder and legacy Terp Eddie Hacopian recorded his first career home run in a Maryland uniform. Maryland will rebound this Friday with a three-game series at fourth-ranked Ole Miss on the SEC Network. First pitch is set for 5 PM EST with 2:30 PM EST start times slated for the weekend.
