Maryland has announced the addition of former Louisville wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer on Wednesday.
Brewer replaces Zohn Burden as Maryland’s wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator in 2022.
Brewer, 57, joins the program with nearly four decades of experience and stops at Marshall, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and the Philadelphia Eagles before joining Louisville in 2009. Brewer coached a pair of former NFL stars in Randy Moss and Dez Bryant while also producing guys like Justin Blackmon, Mack Hollins and most recently Tutu Atwell. Brewer also coached four of the top five North Carolina wide receivers in career receptions at North Carolina.
Brewer will have a loaded wide receiver room to work with in College Park with Dontay Demus, Jacob Copeland, Rakim Jarrett, Jeshaun Jones, Marcus Fleming and Tai Felton returning. That comes one season after the Terps averaged 307.1 passing yards per game, 13th-best nationally and third most in the Big Ten, and posted at least 250 passing yards in all but three games. Maryland’s 3,685 total passing yards in 2021 are the second-most in program history, just 138 yards short of the program record set back in 1993.
Maryland also announced the promotion of tight ends coach Mike Miller to co-offensive coordinator. Per release:
Miller served as Maryland’s Tight Ends Coach and Passing Game Coordinator in 2021, a year in which the Terps offense set numerous school records. Maryland’s potent offensive attack totaled 3,960 yards through the air and 5,740 total yards - both program bests. Terrapin quarterbacks, led by Taulia Tagovailoa, completed 339 passes with a 69.3 percent completion percentage, both also school records.Miller helped guide tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo to a stellar 2021 season as the senior posted 52 catches for 447 yards and five touchdowns. Okonkwo ranked first in the Big Ten in receptions in conference games (41) and second in receiving touchdowns (five). He hauled in 12 receptions against Penn State, the second-most in a game by any Big Ten player this season, and his 112 receiving yards at Michigan State were the second-most by any tight end in a Big Ten game this season.
