Maryland among most consistent schools with West Coast edge

King Drew Magnet (CA) fringe four-star Chinedu Onyeagoro began his high school career on the hardwood, but it didn’t take long for the now 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect to make his way over to football. Fast-forward to now and Onyeagoro has proven himself among the top edge rushers along the West Coast and now fields a double-digit offer list to show for it after posting 21 sacks, 30 tackles for loss and 128 total tackles as a junior. Arizona became the latest school to offer the edge prospect on Friday, joining Kentucky, SMU, Mississippi State, Cal, Tennessee, Miami (FL) and Duke among others. While it’s early, Onyeagoro has already been able to identify a handful of schools making the strongest push. “UCLA, Maryland, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State,” Chinedu Onyeagoro added. Outside linebacker coach James Thomas has led the way so far with Onyeagoro and they’ve established a strong rapport through the fall. “We've been talking for a few months before they offered. He's a great coach, great person. He's real about what he talks about. He wants to develop guys so that's real big for me,” he added. “Things have been going great with them. Good coaching staff, good people. I love what they're doing. I think I'm going to take an official there then take a visit during spring ball.” In addition to the interest from the staff, Onyeagoro has another connection to Maryland. “My coach is actually from there and I have family that lives out there. It's a good football program and it's Big Ten, probably where I want to play at. The weather, they say it's not too bad because I'm from Cali.” With four former Pac-12 schools joining the Big Ten beginning in 2024, Onyeagoro likes the idea that Maryland still gives him a chance to play games closer to home. “I'll be able to travel around a little bit too, be able to come back and play some games here. Play on the East Coast, West Coast so that'd be a great fit for me.” Onyeagoro will look to trim down in the spring. “A lot of schools have been hitting me up to get me to commit, make me feel good,” he added. “I'm going to start trimming down to my top five or top eight after spring ball and right before OV season starts up.” Chinedu Onyeagoro is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 29th-best prospect in California.
