Maryland adds local lineman to 2024 class

Maryland has been building along the offensive line in the 2024 cycle, and they picked up another commit. St. Mary’s Annapolis (MD) offensive tackle Davon Watkins announced his commitment to Maryland, becoming the eighth lineman in the Terps’ 2024 class. Watkins committed to Maryland over offers from Kent State, New Hampshire, Monmouth, Toledo and Akron among others. Watkins was already familiar with Maryland having visited for a pair of games last fall, including the narrow loss to Ohio State, but picked up the offer during the first weekend of June after attending the Big Man camp. “They just wanted me to come down. I didn’t know I was going to pick up the offer,” Watkins told IBG. “I talked to coach and he said that he liked how I’m quick on my feet. I can recover well. He told me some parts that I can work on as well, so there’s always room for some improvement.” Watkins, a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle, returned to campus for an unofficial visit at the end of July only to return on Saturday for Maryland’s season-opening win vs. Towson. With defensive coordinator Brian Williams serving as the area recruiter along with Brian Braswell as position recruiter, it was Saturday when Watkins gave his verbal to the staff, becoming the eighth scholarship pickup this cycle. Watkins is another local lineman who offers positional flexibility in Maryland’s class, a trait that head coach Mike Locksley has even noted with the Terps’ current offensive line room. Watkins joins Samir Camacho, Terez Davis, Michael Hershey, Ryan Howerton, Michael McMonigle, Anthony Robsock and Donovan Thompson. Davon Watkins is not yet rated by On3.
