With the summer circuit now underway and college coaches trekking across the country to watch the top talent in the 2026 class and beyond square off, it’s given first-year head coach Buzz Williams and the new Maryland men’s basketball staff a chance to get eyes on their evolving list of targets to begin building out their recruiting board.
It didn’t take long for the new Terps’ staff to dish out offers, whether it was reaffirming offers like with Mt. Zion Prep (Md.) four-star center Favour Ibe or extending new ones like Berean Baptist Academy (NC) three-star forward Justin Caldwell and Worcester Academy (MA) point guard Amir Jenkins. But for Ant Brown, a local three-star point guard out of Archbishop Carroll, his Maryland offer was reaffirmed last week shortly after the staff got a chance to watch the 6-foot-1 point guard in mid-May. And Maryland remains entrenched among his early contenders.
“Coach Buzz reached out. I actually thought it’d come later, down the line around Peach Jam but when he texted me, I wouldn’t say it was more of a shock because a lot of people said he was going to reach out. He called me leaving film and I saw his name pop up, so it was more than a blessing,” Brown told IBG. “That was the first time we talked. He called me [Tuesday] too just to talk, have a small conversation.”
Brown’s conversations with the new Maryland staff haven’t been limited to just head coach Buzz Williams with new assistant Lyle Wolf also chipping in on early efforts, making it clear to the local point guard he’s a fit in Buzz’s system.
“He basically told me I was one of the best point guards, maybe the best point guard in the area. My ability to pass and score, get others the ball and he gave me credit on the defensive end. He loved my vision, my hunger, my decision-making with the basketball. He couldn’t be at my hometown college without offering one of the best players in the area.”
Memphis and VCU are among the newest schools to join the picture, Oklahoma State extended an offer as they’ve began building relationships, Mississippi State has remained consistent while assistant David Cox is leading efforts for the new Villanova staff. But after Maryland watched Brown, he’s looking to get a closer look at the Buzz Williams-led program.
“We’ve talked about it, still working on dates but it’s 25, 30 minutes away from me so we might go on a weekday, weekend. It’s not a school I have to catch another flight or a two-hour drive.”
What does Brown expect out of a Buzz Williams-led program?
“He told me it’s a defensive-minded team that can score the basketball. He’s really hard on his guards, defensively, do everything and the offense will come to you. He also told me he’s never given a player anything. Anything that has come or what a player has got, they’ve had to work for.”
After being voted as the DC Player of the Year by the DC Basketball Coaches Association following a junior season where he averaged over 24 points and six assists, Brown was named a second-team selection at the Nike EYBL in Kansas City after averaging 19.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG and 2.8 APG where he was named a standout by ZagsBlog.
“Just coming from PVI, I made the decision to go to Carroll and a lot of people thought it’d be a waste of time, I’d be a kid that’d drop off because I changed schools. I definitely used that as motivation.”
Anthony Brown is rated a three-star and 88 overall by On3, checking in as the top-rated prospect in DC and the nation’s 32nd-best point guard.
