Local guard eyeing four schools with recruitment winding down

St. John’s (DC) three-star guard Daquan Davis led the Cadets to a 30-3 record and made the go-ahead score to give St. John’s the win over Paul VI (VA) in the WCAC championship. After averaging 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 42.3 percent from the field this season, Davis capped his junior season as a first-team all-WCAC selection and the MaxPreps D.C. Player of the Year. “I think I did pretty well in the championship game. I had the game with the layup. I feel like I made plays when I needed to make plays,” Davis told IBG. “I’ve just been practicing three, four times a week since the end of the season. I’ve been working on transition threes and passing.” https://twitter.com/jwherron10/status/1630392279897628672 On the recruiting scene, Davis isn’t looking to expand his list of suitors heading into the spring. “I’m not really trying to take a ton of visits, to be honest. I think I have an idea of the couple of schools that I want to go to.” The 6-foot-1 guard looked to visit both Butler and Mississippi State prior to spring before his junior season derailed those plans. Both schools still remain in the mix as the Bulldogs were in contact this week working again on official dates. “I think I’m going to do that still. They just got off the phone with my dad . They were talking to him about dates and stuff for when I can get down there,” Davis added. Meanwhile, the coaching change in South Bend has made the Irish a new contender for Davis. “I know coach Shrewsberry is going to call me from Notre Dame. I want to see how Notre Dame is.” With Butler, Mississippi State and Notre Dame under consideration, Davis has kept a close eye on hometown Maryland with assistant David Cox keeping consistent contact throughout this recruitment. “Coach Cox actually came up to the school the other day to talk to me, chill with me. He actually reached out again, so it’s been good.” After visiting for at least three games during Kevin Willard’s first season, Davis admitted Maryland would “definitely” make his next cut as he looks ahead to trimming his suitors. “I don’t have any questions. I just want to explore other schools to see what they have to offer, but I feel like Maryland has a high chance.” Cox has discussed the possibility of Davis taking an official to Maryland, but how likely is he to do that? “I probably would just because I’ve got five.” Davis added he will look to make his commitment “most likely in June.” Davis is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the fourth-best prospect in D.C. and 19th-best point guard nationally.
