Local '25 guard meets Kevin Willard, eyeing possible return visit to Maryland this fall

2025 Sidwell (DC) three-star point guard Acaden Lewis had been to Maryland plenty of times through the years for basketball and various tournaments, but the 6-foot-3 guard made his way to College Park for an unofficial visit on Wednesday where he got a chance to watch the Terps practice before getting one-on-one time with the coaching staff. “It was good. It was my first time seeing the campus, dorms, locker rooms. I talked to most of the coaches, first time meeting Willard so it was good,” Lewis told IBG. “Good experience.” The first meet between Lewis and Maryland’s head coach gave the two a chance to connect more off the court, but it was what Willard did during practice that caught Lewis’ eye. “He seemed like a genuine guy. He gets good reactions from his players, it looks like everybody respects him. He’s a great basketball mind. I saw him draw up like 30 plays in like a 30-minute span of them scrimmaging.” https://twitter.com/NikeEYB/status/1668023271139287041 Assistant coach David Cox has led the way for Maryland so far with the Terps showing steady interest after watching him through his sophomore year into the summer, including at the Nike Elite Top 100 camp. “Coach Cox, he’s the one recruiting me so I’ve gotten to know him better throughout the process just texting me, him wanting me to get on campus. He’s a cool guy, just talked to him yesterday not even about basketball. They want to keep getting me back on campus for football games and hopefully an officially.” The only issue? Maryland hasn’t extended an offer just yet with a trio of local point guard in Nyk Lewis, Tyler Jackson and Chance Mallory already on the recruiting board. and after Wednesday’s visit, Lewis added the staff will keep tabs on the efficient scorer heading into his junior season. “It feels kind of weird so I don’t know,” Lewis added about officially visiting Maryland without an offer. “I’d probably wait until after the offer but I definitely want to keep getting back on campus.” Virginia, meanwhile, hosted Lewis for an unofficial visit at the beginning of his sophomore year and became a contender in his recruitment after pulling the trigger on an offer Wednesday night. Whether they receive a return visit remains to be seen, but Lewis knows which schools he wants to visit with the start of his junior year around the corner. “I think I’m going to start planning to go to Florida State, Penn State, maybe Oregon soon. Probably go back to Maryland. I know I’ll go back to Georgetown. Providence, too.” Lewis is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the fourth-best prospect in DC and 114th-best in the country.
