There was little doubt who the best team was on Friday night in Severn, Maryland with Archbishop Spalding stifling Don Bosco (NJ) in a 28-14 win. While 2025 four-star quarterback Malik Washington accounted for all four touchdowns in the win, it was the defense who arguably had the better night after rattling the new Don Bosco starting quarterback from start to finish. A big piece in the front seven was linebacker Keyshawn Flowers, who was a mainstay in the backfield and forced a QB hurry that led to a turnover. “For my senior year it’s exciting. Going out playing a team like that, we’ve been practicing for a long time, just got done with camp. Defense played great, offense played good. Definitely exciting to open up the season with a win and win a championship,” Flowers told IBG. “Our defense, stopping the run, stopping the pass. They really couldn’t establish anything on our defense.” Keyshawn wasn’t the only one as Keion Flowers, Keyshawn’s twin brother and Maryland walk-on commit, consistently found himself around the ball to help Spalding’s push in the trenches. 2025 cornerback Jayden Shipps nearly opened the game with an interception with a clear path to the endzone, but still, Keyshawn walked away encouraged with his 2023 debut. “Now, just going out, taking it week by week by winning the championship. Getting that MIAA championship.” Spalding will turn its attention to its next matchup against Imhotep (PA) this weekend, but for Flowers, he enters the season with no concerns about where his recruitment stands. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker was part of a flurry of commits for a Maryland class that now has 19 verbals led by a strong local push, and with Brian Williams and Lance Thompson leading the way, Flowers remains locked in with the hometown team. “I’m committed, so I know Maryland is the spot,” Flowers added. “They’re still doing something. We’ve got a lot of 2024 commits so we’re building. I’m excited to get up there.” Flowers may make his way to College Park this upcoming weekend for the Terps’ season opener against Towson as he looks to become an even more familiar face in the building. “I think they’re in a good place. They’re looking at me at the MIKE so just watch that, but they’ve got a good defense so I’m just excited to watch them ball out.” Flowers is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 13th-best prospect in Maryland.
