Kevin Willard, Maryland basketball in contact with Sun Belt guard

Maryland basketball head coach Kevin Willard has scoured the market to fill his last vacant scholarship ahead of the 2024-25 season and weeks before the signed offseason additions arrive on campus, a new name in the backcourt has come into focus. Maryland has been in contact with former Georiga State guard Lucas Taylor, a source confirmed to IBG, as the staff looks to finalize the backcourt. Taylor entered the transfer portal back in March but the 6-foot-5 guard has watched his recruitment pick back up in recent weeks with the portal thinning out. His mid-January performance against Georgia State delivered a season-high 28 points and five threes while he also posted double figures in games against BYU and James Madison this season. Taylor becomes the newest transfer portal name as Willard and the staff have worked to add the last piece to this offseason's roster overhaul. Maryland was among the long list of schools to draw interest from former North Florida guard Chaz Lanier as he goes through the NBA Draft process, but both Kentucky and Tennessee have been in heavy pursuit with the Terps staring at an uphill battle. Meanwhile, former Clemson guard Alex Hemenway was expected to visit last Thursday but opted to pull the trigger on his commitment to Vanderbilt fresh off his visit to Nashville, leaving the Terps looking elsewhere. While no visit is set heading into the weekend, Taylor becomes the latest viable name to potentially overhaul a backcourt that will be led by former Belmont guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie -- who Taylor matched up against in his first game at Georgia State.
