Maryland has been tracking Kilgore (TX) offensive tackle Wallace Unamba through the spring and brought the 6-foot-5, 337-pound prospect in for an unofficial visit and workout this week. Unamba got a chance to work closely with the staff as he admitted he showed out inside the Jones-Hill House.
“I really liked the facilities and family,” Unamba told Inside the Black and Gold. “I worked out with [director of recruiting] Marcus Berry on the agility, shuttle and stuff and [offensive line coach Brian] Braswell with the drills.” Unamba added he ran just over a 5.1 in the 40-yard dash, leaving him with his biggest area of improvement but admitted he felt the workout was one that was worth making the trip in for. “It was pretty fun. I liked it a lot.”
Offensive line coach Brian Braswell told Unamba what he was most impressed with. “He says he really likes my skill. The one thing I’ll have to get used to getting used to right tackle. I can play left tackle and I do it well but he says just going over to the right side, I’ll need to adjust and get quicker.”
With his in-person evaluation now complete, what’s the next step for Unamba?
“They told me they had some tackles coming in this weekend for an official so for me, they’re going to see how this weekend goes. If it looks like they’re going to need me, they’ll send me for an official next Friday or possibly in the season. We’ll just see how it goes.” While Unamba gave a resounding yes when asked whether he’ll take an official to Maryland if presented, there were still aspects that stuck out to him during his campus tour.
“The indoor field. The facility is actually really nice, it actually really impressed me but knowing their indoor compares with NFL indoors, that’s big time.”
In addition to an offer from Maryland, Unamba is drawing interest from both Nebraska and Rutgers. Unamba was named to the NJCAA second-team All-American as a true freshman. Offensive tackle Tyrone Webber, who originally had an official scheduled to Maryland, was also named to the second team while incoming Maryland center Aric Harris was named to the first team.
