Maryland has one wide receiver commit in the fold after Mervo (MD) three-star and track star Justin DeVaughn pulled the trigger on his commitment after his one and only official visit into June. Maryland hosted several more through the month as they look to restock the room, but saw a pair of targets opt to head elsewhere in Jalil Hall (WVU) and Jeff Exinor (Penn State) while four-star Zymear Smith remains on the board with a commitment looming. But Maryland isn’t giving one regional target despite his recent commitment. Sources close to Virginia Tech verbal Matt Outten tell IBG that the fringe four-star remains in contact with Maryland as the staff continues to recruit him through his senior season. Led by assistant Latrell Scott as Maryland continues to put a premium on Virginia recruiting, Outten was ID’ed as an early priority for Maryland with some close to the explosive four-star pointing to the Terps as the best fit given his big-play ability in Mike Locksley’s offense. Outten took an official visit to Penn State before visiting Maryland beginning June 13, disrupting the quiet buzz in his recruitment with intel pointing to a Big Ten battle brewing. But Virginia Tech worked to change that the final weekend of June, and one week later, it was the Hokies who had pulled ahead of the pack after NIL and renewed emphasis on local recruiting gave head coach Brent Pry and his staff the juice at the finish line. Sources added that Outten is at peace with his decision now behind him and the Hokies’ potential this fall has his attention, but the relationships between the priority target and the Maryland staff have kept the Terps in the picture into mid-summer, albeit still with work to do. It also helps that new Maryland pledge and composite four-star QB Malik Washington is chipping in on recruiting efforts, which has become common feedback over the last two weeks. Outten previously made his way to campus for the first Saturday practice of spring ball where he and his coaches were able to get a closer look into the offense with the pitch still centered around the speedster’s potential early impact in a wide-open wide receiver room. Whether Outten materializes into a tangible flip target heading into the fall remains to be seen, but he’s the regional target to keep close tabs on as veterans Tai Felton and Kaden Prather will exhaust their eligibility following the 2024 season. Meanwhile, in-state wideout Giyahni Kontosis out of Riverdale Baptist (MD) is set to commit on July 27 but Maryland hasn’t been involved in his recruitment through the spring into June despite making his top group. I’m hearing Tennessee is lurking but Cincinnati remains the team to beat for the physical 6-foot-1 wideout. Related Links
