Georgia Cornerback Kevis Thomas Commits to Maryland

Lowndes (GA) three-star cornerback Kevis Thomas has announced his commitment to Maryland.

The 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back took an official visit the weekend of June 17 before heading to Vanderbilt the following weekend but Thomas told Inside the Black and Gold that he knew Maryland was the spot for him “a couple of days after the visit.” He told Maryland back on June 28 that he was headed to College Park to join Maryland’s 2023 class.

“The cornerback that committed from Madison County [Jonathan Akins], when I was on the visit, coach [Henry] Baker told us we were the two he was going to take,” he told Inside the Black and Gold after he decommitted from Vanderbilt. “The visit really made it official.”

Thomas cited “the people, players, the whole recruiting process then the official visit” as reason why he opted for Maryland as he becomes the fifth defensive back in Maryland’s class, joining Jonathan Akins, Tayvon Nelson, Alex Moore and Mykel Morman. With a familiar face hosting him on the official in Glen Miller, Thomas got extensive time with the coaching staff on the visit including one-on-one time with head coach Mike Locksley.

“I talked with him, him and my family. We talked about what stuck out on the visit. It was a surprise when I got there because I didn’t know how nice the facility was. The coaches and the vibe, it was different.” Thomas said after his official that Maryland was “somewhere that I can see myself” as he and his family got a chance to soak in the environment throughout the weekend, including breakfast at Locksley’s house that Sunday. “The highlight was going to coach’s house at the end. everybody connected really well, the bond everybody had was more like family. Wasn’t just football, everybody had a good relationship with each other.”

Thomas is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, sitting as the 62nd-best cornerback prospect in the country.
