Four-star WR Myles McAfee commits to Maryland over Virginia Tech

In the end, Maryland football is set to add another four-star out of Archbishop Spalding.

Four-star wide receiver Myles McAfee has gone public with his decision and announced his commitment to Maryland over Virginia Tech with Notre Dame among the over 20 schools to also offer the 6-foot, 170-pound receiver. McAfee becomes the 20th commitment in Maryland's 2027 class.

The decision comes nearly two weeks after his official visit to Maryland, though the hometown team was the school to watch for the bulk of the last six months with ample connections to the program. McAfee becomes the latest Spalding product to decide on College Park as his home where the four-star now reconnects with former teammates Jayden Shipps, Sean Johnson, Delmar White, and most importantly, quarterback Malik Washington. While veteran safety Lavain Scruggs is another Spalding product on the roster, so is the presence of Kyle Schmitt, McAfee's former head coach during his two seasons at Spalding before Schmitt became the new tight ends coach at Maryland this offseason.

"It just happened like that. It keeps happening so obviously there’s something good about it," McAfee said about the growing Spalding-to-Maryland pipeline.

The four-star told IBG he knew his decision was set "maybe two or three days" after his official visit in College Park was complete.

"Mainly the family atmosphere, knowing all the people and the offense, it’s always been a passing offense and they produce a lot of receivers," McAfee told IBG. "Just knowing a lot of people there, the scene, I feel comfortable there."

McAfee also becomes the sixth wide receiver commit in Maryland's class alongside Davion Vanderbilt, Mason McClure, AJ Henderson, Kyren Caldwell and Alex Fontenot. McAfee, who's also close and played for former Maryland and NFL Torrey Smith on the 7-on-7 circuit, pointed to the need to be versatile in Maryland's offense as a point of emphasis during his latest visit.

“The system is set. They’re not going to change it because I’m here. Come in, do my job, the ball will find itself to you,” McAfee said after his OV. “They want the receivers to play multiple positions - slot and outside. They don’t just want one sticking toward one side. They want their receivers to do a variety of things. He’s bringing moreso that spread look back. They’re going back to Locksley’s old offense like at ‘Bama and early in his Maryland career.”

McAfee is also joins the bulk of the class to become the latest on track to enroll in College Park in January. He missed his junior season due to injury after recording 651 yards and ten touchdowns on 54 catches. Now cleared and back at full strength, the four-star is looking to end his career as a three-time MIAA champion and leader of a strong Spalding roster.

"I want to put on film that I can play everywhere."
