Maryland dipped into Bergen Catholic (NJ) last year to land edge rusher DJ Samuels, who is now in the midst of his first spring ball in College Park. With cornerbacks coach Henry Baker leading the way in his area once again, he’s working with new safeties coach Zac Spavital to get four-star safety Kaj Sanders on campus. “I knew him a little but we’ve really started talking over the last few weeks,” Sanders said of his relationship with Spavital. https://twitter.com/kajsanders_/status/1642871703662469121 “He doesn’t reach out every day, but he reaches out pretty often during the week. He’s said mainly because he doesn’t want to bother me, but still wants to make sure he’s checking up on me.” Sanders and Baker, meanwhile, have been able to build a relationship dating back last spring. “I talk to him every day. That’s my guy.” The longtime interest in Sanders eventually materialized into an offer last month, but the feedback from Samuels, someone that Sanders considers a close friend, has added fuel to the Terps’ pursuit. “He’s told me that he likes it a lot. It shows that what they’re showing recruits, he’s fully committed and it’s the real thing,” Sanders added. Given he’s in the midst of track season, Maryland is among the schools that is working to set a date for a spring practice visit as Sanders balances both schedules. Penn State, Rutgers and South Carolina have also been brought up as suitors for the 6-foot-1 athlete, but Sanders sees an appeal for Maryland. “It’s close to home so that’s something that really sticks out.” As a junior, Sanders rushed for 261 yards and three touchdowns while adding 40 tackles and three interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.
