Four-Star RB Ramon Brown Recaps Maryland Official

Manchester (VA) four-star running back Ramon Brown made his long-awaited trip to College Park over the weekend as the staff rolled out the red carpet.

“It was great. Definitely a good time,” Brown told Inside the Black and Gold. “Brian Cobbs hosted me the first night, Nick Cross hosted me the second. [Cobbs] was telling me he’s from the neighborhood in Virginia but that’s the first time I’ve met him.” The weekend did give Brown an opportunity to bask in the presence of lead recruiter and position coach Elijah Brooks as the 5-foot-11, 202-pound back liked what he saw.

“Coach Brooks is just telling me that I’m number one on their recruiting board as far as running backs. I’m the only one that came on any visit and he told me how bad he wants me.” Wide receiver coach Zohn Burden running as the secondary recruiter for Brown gives Maryland a second assistant with longstanding ties to the four-star back. “I was chatting it up with coach Zohn, catching up and how I’d be used in the offense. Coach Zohn was really telling me how he’s trying to get more Virginia kids to get to this area because he’s from the 757 area.” Brown’s official visit was closed out with a revealing conversation with head coach Mike Locksley.

“We had a good conversation before I left. He was telling me he’s bringing great things. We just really vibed the whole trip, had a good time. That’s really it, can’t say anything more about it.” This weekend also gave Brown an opportunity to learn about his fit in the offense. “Me and coach Brooks had a couple of conversations about how they’d use me. there was some stuff that I agreed on, some stuff we disagreed about how I can fit in so I’m not really sure. It’s a spread offense so it’s similar to what I do in high school and basically is like I can come from high school then college then the next level. I can run in the spread offense and in that system, I can fill in the empty set or come out of the backfield, not just take handoffs.”

Official visits are also treated as an aspect for visitors to ask current players what they thought about their experience within the respective program. Those positive comments only added to Brown’s perspective about the local suitor. “Nick Cross, we had a little decent conversation. He told me why he picked Maryland and then a tight end that just came about six months ago, he’s talking to me and had a good 30-45 minute conversation. He told me how good coach Locksley and the whole coaching staff was to him and why it was clear to him.”

Brown has trekked through College Park before as the staff has long liked the elusive four-star back. While he previously saw pictures and videos of what the new indoor facility would one day look like, Brown’s visit to campus also gave he and his family an opportunity to see the Jones-Hill House for themselves. “Last time I been there was like two years ago so it looked very different from before,” he added. “It was real nice.”

But with Brown’s fourth official visit now complete, the four-star has now seen South Carolina, West Virginia, Penn State and Maryland with a trip to Virginia Tech set for this upcoming weekend. While all five official visits will be complete, Brown may have one more trip set up afterward before he makes a decision.

“I’m not sure, still talking to the coaches from Tennessee about what we’re doing and probably get down there at the end of July. I’ll probably make my commitment sometime in that area, just not sure yet.”

Brown is rated a four-star prospect and a 91 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the ninth-best prospect in Virginia.
