Four-star LB Gabe Williams talks contenders, visit plans

With spring workouts in full swing, Pallotti (MD) four-star linebacker Gabe Williams is doing everything and anything to keep his body prepared and fresh through a hectic 7-on-7 circuit leading into summer. That now includes yoga. “That’s the hardest workout. Hot yoga is hard,” Williams joked. The 6-foot-4 linebacker checked in at 195 pounds during Sunday’s Under Armour camp as he looks to get to 205 before the season. What he also hopes to have before his season is a commitment with several schools still in the mix and four official visits set. “I have officials set to Duke, Virginia Tech, Pitt and Kentucky,” Williams told IBG. That begins with Pitt on June 1, then Virginia Tech during the weekend of June 9, followed by Kentucky then Duke beginning June 23. USC, Maryland and Penn State are among the schools Williams is considering for his fifth official visit as he works to sift through his suitors during crunch time. “I’m narrowing down to my top schools. Still looking around, see what system I fit in, places that know how to use me,” Williams added. “I’m just going with the flow. I’m trying to commit by end of July but if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen.” What’s the most prominent factor in his recruitment? “A place that can develop me and turn me into a talent.” USC is a school that has been in pursuit and Williams explained why the Trojans appeal to him. Just knowing Caleb and Sam go out there and have all the success. And Eric Gentry, Eric’s like the same size as me and everything, how they use him and he’s projected to go to the league this year. I see that and I want to be used the same way. Most people that see us want to put us in the dirt but coach Odom wants to stand us up and take away the middle passing game.” What keeps Maryland in the conversation? “The home team, man. Who doesn’t want to do it at home? If I can do it at home, I don’t need to do it anywhere else. Coach Lance coached guys. He coached at Alabama. He knows what he’s talking about. I talk to coach Lance all the time and even if he’s just giving me tips on how to get better, he thinks I can be a generational talent.” Williams added that he and Maryland have been in discussions about an official visit as inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson remains in hot pursuit of the local four-star. “That’s why I’ve been holding out a little bit, but then again, if I love it I’ll take an official visit there. I’ve been around because I’ve been to Maryland. An official might not be too different from what I’ve seen before. I talk to coach Locksley all the time. I’ve talked with him in his office. I’ve been to Maryland more than ten times, so it’s just different.” Williams is rated a four-star prospect and a 93 overall by On3, sitting as the top-rated prospect in Maryland.
