Former Texas A&M guard Cashius McNeilly announced his commitment to Maryland on Sunday evening.
McNeilly, a 6-foot-4 guard out of Ontario, took an official visit to Maryland over the weekend after his previous official in late December was postponed due to weather. But after making it onto campus and watching the Terps be outscored by 22 points in the second half vs. Rutgers, McNeilly has made his decision despite no permanent head coach in place.
A former four-star and top-150 prospect, McNeilly medically redshirted his freshman season the opted out of the 2020-21 season due to COVID concerns. With three years of eligibility remaining, Maryland evaluated McNeilly in the spring as former head coach Mark Turgeon scoured the transfer portal to fill his 2021-22 roster, but with interim head coach Danny Manning closing out the season, McNeilly will now officially visit a program that has uncertainty surrounding the long-term plan. But as the staff added young portal additions like Ian Martinez, McNeilly’s three remaining years of eligibility would help provide Maryland with improved long-term backcourt depth.
As a high school prospect, McNeilly suited up in the U-16 Americas Championship and averaged 14.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in five games of action, shooting over 42% from the field and nearly 39% from deep.
McNeilly is now Maryland’s lone commitment for next season.
