Maryland has picked up former Tennessee defensive lineman Jordan Phillips. It’s a big pickup for Maryland as the staff plucks him away one year after the staff worked to pluck him out of Ocoee High School (FL). The 6-foot-2, 295-pound defensive end took an official visit to Maryland out of high school but the Terps were unable to make another move, eventually missing out despite being inside the top five. After playing in three games as a freshman, Phillips entered the transfer portal just two days ago as the staff put the finishing touches on his recruitment into Wednesday evening. The commitment becomes the latest pickup for a Maryland unit that is now replenished. After likely returning just one starter next season, Phillips now joins former Saint Francis defensive lineman Donnell Brown while Maryland inked Neeo Avery, Dylan Gooden, Rico Walker, Lavon Johnson, Dillan Fontus and DJ Samuels in the front seven on Wednesday. All of a sudden, the Terps defense now has several high caliber commodities to turn the tide in 2023. Maryland also added former Cincinnati cornerback Ja’Quan Sheppard and Miami safety Avantae Williams in the secondary this offseason to pair with Dante Trader, Beau Brade, Tarheeb Still and Gavin Gibson. With Jaishawn Barham, Ruben Hyppolite and Caleb Wheatland returning next season, Maryland has firepower in its front seven to match the offense. As a senior, Phillips posted 56 tackles, 29 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. Phillips was a rated a three-star prospect and ranked the 79th defensive lineman in the 2022 class by On3, checking in as the 706th overall player in the 247Sports Composite for the class. Phillips also has four years of eligibility remaining and will enroll in January.
