Maryland already secured their starting backcourt in Jahmir Young and Donald Carey, but the Terps replenished the backcourt with a new portal commitment on Friday afternoon.
Former Seton Hall guard Jahari Long announced his commitment to Maryland over North Texas and Tulane, giving the Terps’ backcourt the insurance needed for the 2022-23 season. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard joins Young, Carey, Ian Martinez and Ike Cornish in the backcourt for the 2022-23 season.
Long was limited to five games and a pair of starts last season due to a knee injury sustained in mid-December, but played in 19 games as a freshman where he averaged one point per game in six minutes of action. He becomes the first player to transfer from Seton Hall to Maryland this offseason, citing head coach Kevin Willard as his reason why.
“I appreciate [Coach] Willard recruiting me knowing my history with freshman year COVID being an issue and sophomore year knee injury causing me to sit out,” he told Zagsblog. “I think it shows the trust and belief that he has in me. It has pushed me more to continue to improve my game in order to give people what they deserve to see. I’m ready to perform and show why I can be a top guard in the country.”
With his commitment, Maryland now has two open scholarships for the upcoming season.
