This upcoming weekend will mark the first time that Miami Central (FL) linebacker Lamar Smith visits Maryland when he makes his way to campus for his official visit.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker is excited to check out the atmosphere and acclimate himself to the environment, but his relationship with defensive coordinator Brian Williams is what drove him to make his way north. “We’ve just been talking to get to know each other. Me and coach Brian Williams have this uncle-nephew bond. He recruited my brother at UAB, Larry Smith,” he told IBG.
Maryland followed up the long-standing relationship with a trip to his school where Williams got a chance to see Smith in person while his potential position coach, Lance Thompson, has been in touch. “ he to the spring game and I talked to coach Lance last Thursday.”
Smith’s older brother has given the emerging linebacker prospect a different perspective on Maryland as he looks ahead to learning about his fit on his upcoming visit. “I know that he speaks his mind. He’ll tell you what he likes, what to work on. Coach Lance is the same way. I like that about them.”
FIU, Cincinnati, Illinois and Louisville are among the schools that fill Smith’s double-digit offer list but the Terps are the lone official visit scheduled for now. While a decision could come this weekend, Smith tells IBG he’s looking to finalize his eventual decision prior to his senior year.
