Maryland has added their 11th verbal in the 2022 cycle after Lincoln (FL) three-star athlete Perry Fisher announced his commitment.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete added a Maryland offer in mid-May and had it reaffirmed during his visit to campus this week. “Me and my mom went up there so that was a good experience for her to see where I want to go to college at,” Fisher told Inside the Black and Gold.
Akron, Florida A&M, Maryland, and Mercer all extended offers while Florida State, LSU, Clemson, Arkansas, and Middle Tennessee showed interest. When it came to the Terps, Fisher said they checked off all the boxes. “I been known where I wanted to go. I knew I was going to pick Maryland but the visit was icing on the cake for me,” he added. “When I first got there when I saw the city, not even seeing the facility and stuff like that, it was nice. It was real chill so that was a good thing and it seemed like there’s a lot to do and just the people around, they didn’t see mean or anything. It felt like a real home bond and the next day, we went up to the facilities and I already knew the coaches so just being able to see their faces and putting a name to the face and working out in front of them, talk to them more in person was a good thing, I really enjoyed that. They were treating me like one of their own already so it felt like home from the jump. My mom, she loved the city and she drilled the coaches with questions and they came back with the right answers so she loved the place too.”
Fisher lines up primarily at quarterback but after working out at both wide receiver and defensive back, he’ll join the program as a wide receiver with a lofty comparison after running a 4.5 40 yard dash during his workout on campus. “Dontay [Demus], they compared me to him. That was a great feeling and I was honored to be compared to his game because he’s where I want to be at when it comes to college football and I want to bring what he brought to the table.”
Co-defensive coordinator Brian Williams led the charge in Fisher’s recruitment. “He’s the first guy I talked to. We talked a lot, we Facetimed a lot and stayed in touch every week so just getting to see him in person, it was great. It was nothing but smiles that I could give. It just really felt like a home from the jump.” Fisher wrapped up his visit by giving the staff his verbal before announcing publicly two days later. “I told coach Williams at first and then I told everybody else after the workout. It’s huge because I get to lock my spot in and it’s huge because I’m under a black coach. You don’t have a lot of those so that’s a good thing. The coaches love me up there and treat me like their own and they know what I go through as a black man so just growing up under that shows a lot. If you get to sit down and talk with them and you pick their brain, they really want the best for you and outside of football, they want you to grow as a man and not just as a football player. That’s big for me and my mom.”
Fisher is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the 135th-best athlete in the country. With Fisher’s commitment, Maryland holds the nation’s 28th-best recruiting class.
