In the end, a return home was always in the cards as a former in-state recruit announces his commitment. FIU wide receiver Tyrese Chambers has announced his commitment to Maryland, giving the Baltimore native one season to close out his college career in College Park. "The message was simple. Just come in and do what I’m supposed to do and my dreams will come true. It’s a lot of opportunities there," Chambers told IBG. Chambers took an official visit to Colorado last weekend and is fresh off an official visit to Maryland this weekend. Head coach Mike Locksley chipped away at the former FIU standout, which proved to be a reason why the Terps were able to top Deion Sanders and Colorado. "I always gravitated towards him. Great guy, good coach that I can be myself around. He’s really authentic," Chambers added. Being coached by Gunter Brewer, an accomplished receivers coach with ample NFL players produced through his career, was the cherry on top. "He coached a lot of great players, Biletnikoff winners, Randy Moss. He’s been in the game in the game for a while and what he’ll be able to do for me will help me take my game to the next level.” Chambers was also a transfer target to remember last season after he entered the portal and contemplated a visit to Maryland, but elected to return to school in order to complete his degree. Following the 2022 season, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver announced his intention of entering the transfer portal. After eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards at Baltimore Poly, Chambers began his college career at Fort Scott JC before transferring to Sacred Heart in 2019. 50 catches and eight touchdowns later, Chambers was named an FCS All-American along with drawing NEC rookie of the year honors. Chambers then transferred to FIU where he played the last two seasons and totaled 96 catches for 1,618 yards and 13 touchdowns. Chambers posted ten catches in two different games last season (Texas St., Charlotte) and eclipsed 100-yards receiving in the week six win over Charlotte. After entering the transfer portal this offseason, Chambers immediately drew a slew of offers but head coach Mike Locksley began showing interest from the start. While the staff kept close tabs on Kaden Prather’s status this offseason, Maryland extended Chambers an offer and proceeded to make the top eight alongside Colorado, Cincinnati, UConn, Arizona State, UCF, Toledo and West Virginia. Chambers knew what factors he prioritized heading into the portal. “Quarterback. That’s number one, good quarterback somewhere that can get me the ball. Family-oriented environment, somewhere I’m comfortable and the system and school, coaching staff are comfortable. Just an organization that’s going to help me get to the next level, get to the NFL. Winning culture,” he told Inside the Black and Gold this month. Chambers graduated from FIU and will enroll in College Park in January. He becomes the second transfer portal commitment, joining Cincinnati cornerback Ja’Quan Sheppard.
