Maryland reeled in defensive lineman Darrell Jackson out of Gadsden County at the tail end of the 2021 recruiting cycle and the Terps dipped back into the Florida school to become one of three new Power Five offers for 2023 safety Cameron Upshaw Jr. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound safety had an inkling that the offers would come—just not this quickly.

Maryland was the first Power Five offer before Penn State and Virginia followed suit. “I didn’t have any idea, just came out the blue,” Upshaw told Inside the Black and Gold. Schools are looking at Upshaw at safety but he admits “I’ve put out good defensive film but I’ve put out good offensive film too.” Upshaw connected with defensive line coach Brian Williams, who coached alongside Upshaw’s coach Devin Rispress in the high school ranks.

“I talked to coach [Brian] Williams at Maryland, he’s a good dude. I didn’t really talk with the rest of the coaching staffs, he told me to keep balling, he likes what he sees on film. I talked to Darrell Jackson too because he played at Gadsden County and he’s up at Maryland now. The things he tells me about Maryland, I loved it.” The early returns on Jackson’s time as a Terp have offered a good first impression to Upshaw. “He told me about the coaching staff, that it’s all love and they’re going to make you the best person that you can.”

Upshaw does not have a visit penciled in just yet but will look to make it to Maryland to check the campus out himself while watch a Gadsden County alum suit up during conference play. “I’ll be at Maryland in a couple of weeks,” Upshaw added. He knows the first thing he wants to see in-person. “The facilities. I want to see everything about it.”

Georgia State and Florida State are two more schools that have shown interest in Upshaw, a first-year starter at Gadsden County. Upshaw transferred from Taylor County this offseason and after feeling he’s gotten “faster and I’m hitting harder,” the coaching from his coaches like Rispress have helped the Florida athlete take the next step. “Me transferring to Gadsden helped me get coached better at my position so I’ve learned a lot of new things about playing safety and cornerback. I can play anywhere in the secondary—corner, nickel, safety either strong or free, and I can come down and hit.”

Upshaw also boasts a 4.2 weighted GPA and with his mid-season junior film out, he knows his recruitment is only starting. “I’m just a ball player. The film speaks for itself.”

Upshaw is not yet rated by 247Sports.
