After falling to Iowa less than three weeks ago, Maryland women’s basketball got their revenge. Maryland outscored Iowa 27-8 in the second quarter and never looked back to defeat the sixth-ranked Hawkeyes, 96-68, in front of 9,065 inside the Xfinity Center. Brinae Alexander was one of four in double figures and led the way with 24 points, while Lavender Briggs finished with 19 points on 60% shooting from the field. “Obviously that second quarter was a thing of beauty when you saw the defensive gameplan that we had and we were super locked in with the two of them and then offensively, just how unselfish we were and sharing the basketball,” head coach Brenda Frese said following the win. “Also told the team in the locker room, for and to just continue to stay the course for us and to be able to have that kind of X-factor night for us was huge.” https://twitter.com/TerpsWBB/status/1628214965630038018 The 29-4 run included ten of a season-high 14 three-pointers on the night as they picked up their fourth win against a top-ten team this season. Iowa guard Caitlin Clark entered the night averaging 27.3 points, third-most in the country, but was held in check after finishing with 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting. “We really preached heavy gaps for this game then obviously took over Caitlin Clark a few times too so it was just a really good all-around effort,” Sellers added. “It’s obviously good to shut someone down of that caliber.” Maryland stretched its lead to as many as 24 in the third quarter as Maryland moves to 6-3 versus ranked teams this season. “I think since the Nebraska loss, you talk about this team has won eight straight games at home including top-ten wins against UConn, Ohio State and Iowa so just putting a really complete resume, peaking at the right time going into the tournament. I think that says a lot about the response tonight for the 40 minutes.” With the win, Maryland (23-5, 14-3) and Iowa (22-6, 14-3) now sit tied for second in the Big Ten. With Maryland winners now in 16 of their last 18 games, they won’t have much time to rest as they travel to 16th-ranked Ohio State on Friday afternoon to close out the regular season.
