DeMatha four-star forward Tyrell Ward is set to announce his commitment at 3 PM today among a final group of Virginia Tech, Maryland, Xavier, LSU, Indiana, and Louisville.
The Terps have been fighting to break into the WCAC powerhouse this cycle as head coach Mark Turgeon has remained consistent with Ward and four-star guard Rodney Rice. Ward took an unofficial visit to College Park to kick off June and listen to the Terps’ pitch.
“It’s a lot like LSU, just come in and be an impact player and show out,” Ward said at the time. New assistant Danny Manning led the way with Ward. “It’s pretty good. I try and take in everything that he says that he teaches me because he was a number one overall draft pick. Just soak it all in, honestly.”
But the Terps’ recruiting efforts is not expected to yield a commitment as Xavier is surging in the 247Sports crystal ball, notching all six predictions since Ward’s commitment plans became public. Ward took an official visit to LSU in mid-June and trekked to Virginia Tech for an unofficial visit where the four-star product was able to reconnect with his former head coach, Mike Jones.
Earlier this summer, Ward released a top eight in late May with Georgetown, Georgia, Indiana, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Xavier making the cut.
Ward is rated a four-star prospect and a 90 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the fourth-best prospect in Maryland.
