Maryland has a pair of four-star options they’re after out of DeMatha in the 2022 cycle as head coach Mark Turgeon and the staff works hard to break through the WCAC powerhouse. After making the top eight for four-star forward Tyrell Ward, Maryland found themselves still in the mix after guard Rodney Rice announced a top six of Alabama, Georgetown, Louisville, Maryland, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Rice took his first official visit to Alabama beginning June 6 as head coach Nate Oats pitched the Crimson Tide’s tempo as a perfect fit for the four-star. “Play my game. They play fast and basically playing that style of basketball. It’s a focus for the offense so I like to see that.” Rice is also fresh off an official visit to Louisville and previously visited Virginia Tech for an unofficial, where he was able to reconnect with former DeMatha head coach Mike Jones.
“We already have the connection so it was nice having that connection when I went out there.” With head coach Mark Turgeon, assistants Bruce Shingler and Danny Manning on the sidelines at DMV Live on Saturday, Maryland has yet to host Rice on a visit this month though the 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard kept the hometown team in the picture.
“I’m going to get a visit to Maryland, I don’t know when though but I’m trying to get one in. Probably an official,” Rice said earlier this month. Rice also noted the Hoyas as a school recruiting him hard through the process.
“Georgetown. They want to put the ball in my hands. They’ve been recruiting me pretty hard the last year and a half so I like that.”
Rice previously said he’d make a commitment prior to the start of his senior season.
Rice is rated a four-star prospect and a 94 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the second-best prospect in Maryland.
