Decision day has arrived for North Caroline (MD) composite four-star Zymear Smith. Smith, a 6-foot, 170-pound athlete, will announce among a final three including Maryland, Penn State and South Carolina. While a late decision was the initial expectation coming out of his Maryland official visit, IBG reported on Smith's imminent commitment plans last week as he initially eyed a July 15 commitment before finalizing his announcement for today, July 19. The North Caroline star backed off his verbal pledge to Alabama back on July 3, less than two weeks after he followed through on his official visit to Maryland. Smith has been a top target for Maryland since the start of the 2025 cycle as assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim spearheaded efforts to quickly build a tight-knit bond between the two. “He’s that guy. I want to be around that type of coach,” Smith told IBG. “We definitely connected off the jump. It’s just good to put a face to the name. We were cooling all day. He’s the truth. He’s not going to bullshit you. He’s going to tell you right from wrong and the way he wants it done. That’s the type of coaches I want to be around, man.” Maryland was a top contender for Smith despite his mid-February offer from Alabama, and although Smith pulled the trigger on his verbal commitment to the Tide back in March, contact remained strong between the four-star and Maryland. Penn State and Pitt were also in the mix for official visits in June, but Smith followed through on just one visit to College Park where the Terps were able to roll out the red carpet. Penn State and South Carolina worked to get the four-star on campus following the July dead period, though visits outside of the state won't come to fruition. Smith, who carries the 'athlete' tag in the 2025 cycle, shined both ways as a junior and earned all-state honors. He finished with 22 tackles, seven pass breakups and one forced fumble along with a pair of punt returns for touchdowns, 12 total offensive touchdowns and just shy of 1,100 yards from scrimmage. Zymear Smith is rated a three-star prospect and 88 overall by On3, checking in as the 20th-best prospect in Maryland. On3 composite rating has Smith as a four-star prospect and the nation’s 12th-best athlete.
