Maryland football will look to win four bowl games in as many seasons when they begin their 2024 season, marking a first for the program's history. Head coach Mike Locksley returns all but two position coaches from last season while several key figures lead the roster with RB Roman Hemby, LB Ruben Hyppolite, safety Dante Trader Jr. and receivers Kaden Prather and Tai Felton among those leading the way. While Maryland will have questions to answer along the roster, updated preseason win totals for the 2024 season have appeared to reach a consensus. Circa Sports set the over/under for Maryland's win total at 6.5 on Monday, while Action Network followed that up on Tuesday with a projected seven win total. That projection remains in line with both DraftKings and FanDuel, who have the over/under set at 6.5 with odds slightly more favorable on FanDuel at -134 for the over. Maryland's defense has experience on its side with seven starters back in 2024 including Hyppolite and Quashon Fuller, both All-Big Ten selections in 2023. Glen Miller replaces NFL-bound Beau Brade alongside Dante Trader Jr., while former All-MAC cornerback Jalen Huskey was among the first portal commitments to fill in as a starting corner heading into 2024. Maryland restocked the offensive line through the portal as Josh Kaltenberger (Purdue), Aliou Bah (Georgia) and Alan Herron (Shorter) worked at center, guard and tackle through spring ball, but the biggest offseason storyline is who ultimately wins the quarterback battle. "We’re a long ways away from naming a starter. As you can see, the competition is, it’s hard to tell. They’re all talented. They all have made some plays. They all made some mistakes but what I’ve tried to get them back in that room is them understanding every play won’t be a touchdown. And we always talk about the guy that wins the job has to have the mind of a coach, but the skill set of a player and that’s what it ultimately comes down to because as a coach, there’s down and distance situations, there’s placement of the ball in the field situations. There’s turnovers, how you react after a turnover, and I want to see those guys play quarterback. To me playing quarterback is understand the big picture, when to attack, be risk-averse and I saw some guys take steps today. All of those guys that played today took some steps forward," Locksley said following the spring game. We’ll get to watch the film and really evaluate it. We’ll progress this competition through the summer.” Maryland will host UConn and Villanova while traveling to Virginia for its non-conference schedule, while Northwestern, USC, Rutgers and Iowa head to College Park in Big Ten play. Maryland will also travel to Indiana for its first conference road game and travel to Minnesota and Oregon before closing the regular season out at Penn State. With much to be decided, Action Network included Maryland in the March bowl projections with the Terps slated to face a familiar opponent in a familiar stadium: NC State in the Pinstripe Bowl.
