After seeing a handful of NFL decisions on the offensive side of the ball, the defense has now seen its first player make his decision public. Cornerback Deonte Banks will forego his senior season and declare for the 2023 NFL Draft, he announced on Monday. https://twitter.com/ghafirtheturtle/status/1599797994098151424?s=46&t=wdfxdxpPEdsGPMqZYK51dA The former Edgewood three-star prospect signed with Maryland during the 2019 class and quickly became an integral part in the secondary. Even as a high school prospect, the former staff grew increasingly impressed with the athleticism that the instinctive corner played with and that carried through into his college career. Banks started the final eight games of his true freshman season and appeared in all five contests during the 2020 season, but a season-ending shoulder injury derailed his junior season. Banks ended his senior year as one of six honorable mention All-Big Ten selections along the defense after recording one interception and 25 tackles this season. He also registered nine pass breakups while not allowing a reception over 30 yards all season. According to PFF, Banks is only allowing a 43.4% completion percentage when targeted this year by opposing offenses, the 18th-best mark in the nation and second-best in the Big Ten. With a first round draft grade heading into the next phase of his career, Maryland’s cornerback room will now need a bonafide playmaker through the portal for next season with cornerback Tarheeb Still likely returning. Maryland also returns Gavin Gibson and Lionell Whitaker after burning through their redshirts in 2022, while Perry Fisher will get a chance to see increased playing time with cornerbacks coach Henry Baker preparing the next wave of talent.
