Buzz Williams, Maryland basketball makes pitch to priority target Junior County ahead of decision time

Wasatch Academy (UT) four-star guard Junior County has been busy over the last month after trimming down to his final five including Arizona, Indiana, Maryland, Purdue and UConn. The 6-foot-4 guard has already completed four of those visits after visiting Purdue last fall and both Arizona and Indiana the first two weekends of September.

County then made his way to College Park the weekend of Sept. 12 for his first visit to Maryland, but it also marked his second official visit spent with head coach Buzz Williams after the top-50 prospect officially visited Texas A&M last season to get a closer look at the Aggies. County’s latest trip gave him a chance to see several familiar faces, including assistant coach Lyle Wolf.

“Just the connection, the feel from Buzz [Williams] that I really am a priority and the face-to-face, getting to see that,” County told IBG about the visit’s biggest takeaway. “I have a really strong relationship with everyone on the staff, mostly with Lyle [Wolf] and Buzz. Just the fact that we’ve been talking for a really long time. They hit me up consistently and they’re always honest, give me the real.”

County spent ample time around campus and the arena, including an in-depth tour of the new practice facility right after he arrived on campus.

“It was amazing just seeing campus and meeting with coach again and just following up on everything. They told me a little bit before because the facility, it hadn’t been finished so they told me bits and pieces but they really left it for me to come see to surprise me a little bit,” County added. “It was cool to see how well-placed everything was, like the training room and the cafeteria and weight room, everything is just right there for us.”

The weekend in College Park also gave County a chance to see familiar faces like Pharrel Payne and Solomon Washington, a pair of Aggie transfers expected to become key pieces in Maryland’s identity in 2025-26, though the guard target saw a similar on-court fit that once stuck out during his Texas A&M visit.

“I don’t think the fit changed at all. Play style-wise, they’re doing a couple of things different but the fit is still there,” he added. “I got to watch one of their defensive boot camp days so it was cool to see how they go about that, how detailed they are. I got to meet with the players a little bit but I could just tell they love being there, they love the coach.

County also left knowing he’s a priority for the Maryland staff.

“They talked about this would the official class so they really see me as a priority. I got to see their offense when they were back at A&M and how they play a lot with ball screens, really guard-heavy so we [dove] into that a little bit more.”

With his third fall official visit now complete, County noted that Maryland stacks up “really well” against his remaining finalists as the four-star heads to UConn this upcoming weekend for what’s expected to be his final visit ahead of a decision. After, County looks to shift into decision mode.

“I think I want to keep everything fresh so I think I’ll end up making it a week, within a week after my last visit.”
