Brian Williams expected to head to Jacksonville State as defensive coordinator

After six seasons with the program, Maryland football is expected to have a new defensive coordinator in 2025 with Brian Williams expected to become the new defensive coordinator at Jacksonville State. Matt Zenitz first reported the news with Football Scoop reporting the news minutes later.

Williams was the longest-tenured on-field assistant under head coach Mike Locksley as the Florida native now joins Charles Kelly, the former Auburn co-defensive coordinator and South Carolina assistant, at Jacksonville State after he was announced as head coach back on Dec. 20. Kelly filled the void left vacant by Rich Rodriguez, who returned to West Virginia as the program’s next head coach.

Williams began his coaching career as a defensive analyst at Florida State back in 2013 where he spent two seasons before moving to the University of Georgia as the player relations director in 2015. After three seasons as the linebackers coach at UAB, Williams joined Mike Locksley at Maryland where he initially became the outside linebackers coach before moving to the defensive line in 2020. Williams was then elevated to co-defensive coordinator in 2021 while serving as the primary play-caller in 2021, leading to wins against Rutgers and Virginia Tech.

Prior to 2024, Maryland’s defense allowed less points per game each season since 2019 while the 22.5 points allowed in 2023 was the fewest since 2010.

Williams was a big part in Maryland’s recruiting efforts in the Sunshine State over the years while he led the way with offensive tackle Lamar Williams and was area recruiter for a handful of local signees, including quarterback Malik Washington.
