Breaking down Maryland's snap counts in the win vs. Charlotte

Maryland didn’t unload the bench against Charlotte like they did in the week one win over Towson, but nearly 60 Terps saw the field in Saturday night’s comeback win. Maryland saw a long list of players see the field on defense, but the offensive line went a bit more conservative with its rotations compared to week one. We dive into Maryland’s snap count from the Charlotte game: https://m.youtube.com/watch?si=XIcfA3RXcAvYoDs3&v=_ZrGofgQAZo&feature=youtu.be

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa: 68 Billy Edwards Jr.: 6 Taulia Tagovailoa finished with a grade of 81 against Charlotte on 68 as he finished 25-of-36 for 287 yards, one touchdown and two INTs. Billy Edwards Jr., however, would shine as the short-yardage quarterback where his touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter gave Maryland a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Edwards didn't record a passing stat, but finished with -1 yards on two carries in the win.

Running back Roman Hemby: 59 Colby McDonald: 9 Antwain Littleton: 6 Maryland didn’t have either Nolan Ray or Ramon Brown available against Charlotte, but Roman Hemby led the way with over 200 yards of total offense to finish with a 78.7 grade on the ground. Colby McDonald (67.9) narrowly graded higher than Antwain Littleton (66.7), who was sidelined following his unsportsmanlike penalty midway through the game.

Wide Receiver/Tight End Tai Felton: 60 Jeshaun Jones: 53 Kaden Prather: 46 Corey Dyches: 45 Octavian Smith: 31 Preston Howard: 25 Rico Walker: 19 AJ Szymanski: 4 Dylan Wade: 3 Shaleak Knotts: 3 Leon Haughton: 3 Jeshaun Jones and Kaden Prather finished with a team-high seven targets, while Prather finished with a team-high 80 receiving yards and Corey Dyches hauled in all six of his targets in the win, but for the second consecutive week, it was Tai Felton who led the room with snaps. Six different players caught at least three passes in Saturday night’s win vs. Charlotte, while Rico Walker added a 16-yard reception.

Offensive Line Conor Fagan: 74 Corey Bullock: 71 DJ Glaze: 71 Amelio Moran: 63 Aric Harris: 44 Mike Purcell: 30 Kyle Long: 14 Marcus Dumervil: 3 After being sidelined in the week one win vs. Towson, Maryland had Gottlieb Ayedze available against Charlotte but opted with the more traditional starting five with Glaze, Bullock, Moran and Fagan locking down the tackle and guard spots. Aric Harris, meanwhile, spent the first half at center before Purcell rotated in for the second half. It was Purcell who finished with the best grade on offense (85.1), including the highest run-blocking grade (79). Maryland saw Long and Dumervil rotate into the starting rotation in the second half with the game in hand.

Defensive Line Tommy Akingbesote: 26 Jordan Phillips: 25 Quashon Fuller: 22 Tre Colbert: 19 Taizse Johnson: 17 Isaac Bunyun: 17 Lavon Johnson: 14 Dillan Fontus: 13 Christian Teague: 11 Daniel Owens: 7 Isaac Bunyun was the lone defensive lineman to eclipse an overall grade of 80, narrowly making the cut (80.1), as the defensive line rotated similar to its week one win vs. Charlotte. Bunyun recorded the lone tackle for loss from the unit, while he, Tommy Akingbesote and Jordan Phillips all finished with two tackles each.

Linebackers Kellan Wyatt: 38 Donnell Brown: 30 Jaishawn Barham: 23 Riyad Wilmot: 23 Fa’Najae Gotay: 21 Caleb Wheatland: 16 Kobi Thomas: 15 Ruben Hyppolite: 14 Gereme Spraggins: 12 Daniel Wingate: 11 Sean Greeley: 10 Mike Harris: 7 Nobody graded better than Mike Harris, who captured the spotlight in the fourth quarter after coming down with an interception returned to midfield in the fourth quarter. Brown finished with the highest grade on defense (90.3), including in coverage (93.3), among any Maryland defender, while veteran Fa'Najae Gotay graded as Maryland's best run defender (82.2). Caleb Wheatland, who finished second on the team with six tackles including five solo, was graded as Maryland's top tackler (80.4). Jaishawn Barham was credited for a pair of sacks and finished with the second-highest grade on defense (85.2)

Secondary Beau Brade: 44 Dante Trader Jr: 41 Tarheeb Still: 37 Corey Coley: 26 Ja’Quan Sheppard:26 Alex Moore: 19 Lionell Whitaker: 12 Rex Fleming: 10 Chantz Harley: 8 Glen Miller: 6 Kevis Thomas: 5 Perry Fisher: 2 Beau Brade finished with a team-high seven tackles in the win, though Dante Trader Jr. (68.9) graded the highest in the secondary. Both Tarheeb Still and Ja’Quan Sheppard registered a tackle for loss while Sheppard added a pass breakup. Sheppard also allowed one catch on three targets in Saturday’s win, while freshman Alex Moore finished with the third-highest grade in coverage (67.4) in 19 snaps.
