Billy Edwards on USC win: "We have to go out there and hunt, not be hunted"

Maryland football pulled off a thrilling comeback win on Saturday against blueblood USC by scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure their first conference win of the season. It was a win the Terps desperately needed for their season as Maryland now sits two wins away from bowl eligibility. Saturday’s win also helped to reaffirm confidence inside the locker room.

"I think the win on Saturday helped the morality of the team," said quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. "But I think we're all just trying to keep the mentality that we lost against USC. We have to go out there and hunt, not be hunted, because every game is going to be a dog fight and come down to the fourth quarter.”

The Terps will continue to hunt on Saturday against Minnesota. The Golden Gophers have won their last two games, against USC and UCLA and are four-point favorites as of Wednesday.

“Minnesota is playing good football,” said Edwards Jr. “They've lost some games they probably should have won. Their record doesn't really speak for how good they've been playing, especially defensively.”

Edwards played his best game of the season over the weekend, finishing 39-out of-50 passes and threw two touchdowns and one interception. While he set a new career high with 373 passing yards, it was his game-winning rushing touchdown with 53 seconds left that lifted the Terps in the end.

“We're not surprised with the way Billy has been performing,” said receiver Octavian Smith Jr. “We've been seeing him since winter workouts through spring, all the way through summer. It's not a surprise to us, but he's gonna keep going.”

It was a career day for Smith, as he set new highs in catches and yards, and also hauled in Maryland's first touchdown of the day.

"I've been waiting a long time for a game like this, but it's not really a huge surprise," said Smith. "I just stayed consistent and did what the coaches told me to do."

Defensively, one of the biggest plays of the game came when midway through the third quarter, Lavain Scruggs picked off USC quarterback Miller Moss and returned it inside the redzone. One play later, Edwards connected with Tai Felton to make it a 21-14 game in what could’ve quickly been 28-7.

“It was a good call by Brian Williams, and honestly just me doing my job,” said Scruggs. “The QB was eyeing the receiver and they were running the same route all game and I just undercut the route.”
