Arkansas guard DJ Wagner announces transfer to Maryland basketball for 2026-27

Maryland men’s basketball now has its second portal guard commitment of the offseason.

Former Arkansas guard DJ Wagner is transferring to Maryland for the 2026-27 season, joining Bishop Boswell as portal commitments in the backcourt for head coach Buzz Williams. Wagner now joins Boswell, Tomislav Buljan, Maban Jabriel and Robert Jennings in the fold while Maryland is already set to return Andre Mills and Pharrel Payne in 2026-27.

Wagner, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound point guard originally from Arkansas, took a visit to College Park on Thursday with buzz quickly emerging that the Terps were a top team to watch in the portal pursuit. He now heads to Maryland as part of a backcourt solution working to upgrade the point guard rotation, one of the top priorities for the staff this offseason.

Wagner serves as a notable boost in a backcourt that now has two experienced 6-foot-4 point guards paired with a pair of productive big men in Buljan and Payne. Five-star Baba Oladotun also headlines a current four-man recruiting class as part of the wave of reinforcements ahead of a pivotal year two for Buzz Williams & Co.

Wagner posted 13 double figure scoring games in his final season at Arkansas and at least four assists in eight games where he went on to backup Darius Acuff, expected lottery pick who was named SEC Player of the Year as a freshman, after starting in all 36 games during the 2024-25 season. He began his college career at Kentucky in 2023-24 where he was named to the SEC All Freshman Team before following head coach John Calipari to Fayetteville.

The former Arkansas guard arrives with one year of eligibility remaining.
