As head coach Mike Locksley puts the wrap on the first ten days of fall camp, Maryland football released its updated online roster this week with a handful of Terps transforming their frames heading into the 2024 season.
No player added more size than Andre Roye, who added 21 pounds this offseason and is now listed at 6-foot-6, 294 pounds. A former four-star prospect out of St. Frances, Roye has drawn rave reviews through summer workouts where he’s been seen stepping in at left tackle with the first-team offensive line during the open portions for media during fall camp. After appearing in seven games through his first two seasons, Roye continues to make his case to take over the spot held by DJ Glaze last season.
Roye isn’t the only offensive lineman who added size as Isaac Bunyun is up 11 pounds, now listed at 321 pounds heading into his final season with the program. After showcasing himself as an integral piece in the defensive line rotation over the last four seasons, Bunyun has been spotted taking reps at left guard with the first-team offensive line after head coach Mike Locksley raved about the former walk-on in the spring.
“Ike has been a three-year guy that’s really rotated and played a lot of good football for us on the defensive line, but I do think for him to have an opportunity at the next level, we’ve evaluated him over the last two to three months in our Terp Time workouts. We identified him as a guy [who] could possibly help us and give us a presence there, especially a veteran guy,” Locksley said after the open spring practice in Baltimore. “He’s athletic, he’s strong, he’s got good power.”
While Champ Long dropped 19 pounds and enters the season listed at 202, a pair of tight ends also made impressive weight transformations after AJ Szymanski added 11 pounds and Leron Husbands added 15 pounds. While Husbands and Leon Haughton showcase themselves to round out a tight end room that’s drawn rave reviews over the last 12 months, Szymanski could become the primary option to emerge as Maryland’s blocking tight end this fall.
On the other side of the ball, Lavon Johnson dropped 11 pounds heading into his second season with the program while Daniel Owens (+12), Dylan Gooden (+14) and Neeo Avery (+15) all notched double-digit weight gains this offseason as Owens is now listed at 268 pounds, Gooden at 212 pounds and Avery at 273 pounds. While Gooden’s added mass is evident in-person, the trio will be part of arguably Maryland’s deepest front seven under Mike Locksley.
Entering his second season in the program, linebacker Mike Harris recorded the largest weight transformation this offseason after adding 16 pounds and entering the season at 223 pounds. The Florida native will play a key role in the 2024 rotation alongside Daniel Wingate, Keyshawn Flowers and Keyari James as Ruben Hyppolite and Caleb Wheatland lead the unit into the Aug. 31 season opener vs. UConn.
