After Workout & Visit, OT David Conner Explains Offer from Maryland

Deerfield Beach (FL) three-star offensive tackle David Conner had not been in touch with Maryland heading into July, but head coach Jevon Glenn has a strong connection with the staff after the Terps inked former four-star receiver DeaJaun McDougle during the 2019 cycle. That connection between the staff helped Conner, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound tackle, set up a workout and visit with the staff as he made it into College Park during the final week of July.

That workout gave the Maryland staff an opportunity to check out Conner in-person for themselves, quickly paving the way for an offer after working with offensive line coach Brian Braswell. “I ran a 40, did the broad jump and vertical then just got to the drills,” Conner told Inside the Black and Gold. “I liked his coaching ways.”

Conner took advantage of the opportunity to transfer from Martin Luther King (GA) to Deerfield Beach this offseason, citing “a new opportunity and I wanted to play against better competition.” While a national schedule helps Conner elevate his recruiting profile, he’s now a new name on the Terps’ revolving tackle board. The next step is telling Conner what the Terps have to offer. “I never actually talked to Maryland before, so I don’t know too much. I know I’m interested in Maryland now.” Conner got a chance to meet McDougle during his time on campus as the two got a chance to briefly talk, but Conner will look to the former four-star to learn about his experience during his time in College Park. “I just want to learn more about the team, what they look for in a player and how they build their players into the best man.”

Conner revealed why the Terps extended an offer and what impressed them. “Just my athleticism and my footwork and my effort. I’m in shape, I move good. I know how to listen and change things, so they liked that I was coachable.”

Maryland will likely go down to Florida this fall to catch Conner in a game.

“I talked to the head coach about it. He said they’re very interested in me and they’re going to follow me this season and come down to see me.”

In addition to a recent offer from Arizona, Conner is also drawing interest from both Florida and Miami as more schools do their homework on the new South Florida tackle. Conner also holds verbal offers from FAU, FIU, Liberty and Jackson State among others.

Conner is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by 247Sports.
